This isn't so much a doodle I did this week as it is a drawing I did a couple years ago... that counts right? HEY, I'm going on vacation... I WAS BUSY :-)

Traveling Art and the Non Traditional Canvas Part II

Hiya FOLKS! (neener neener Sarah!) WELL, here's the thing.... the AWESOME THING! I'm leaving for the sunny beaches of Florida in less than a day (hooray!) and because of one reader I thought I'd post a picture of another of my traveling canvas works AKA suitcase art!

If you haven't a clue as to why I painted my suitcases, you can view the original story HERE. It will explain this fun little project in depth... or as deep as the project goes, which truth be told isn't so much "deep" as it is one of my brilliant artistic "ideas."

I intend to paint more on this lovely little piece and did but I painted over it... that's right, I'm talking to you verbage on the side in my crappy penmanship! Buh-bye! Maybe you can notice the subtle change in the color black on the sides? meh. BUT for now, it's just my wicked cool interpretation of a bonsai tree! This was a way fun way to test my dry brushing skills on an unprimed "canvas" and boy was it a hoot! I literally whipped this thing out in about an hour... or more... I can't remember, but I do know it didn't take as long as my carry-on bag! Oy vey!

Color Me Green!

One of my absolute favorite things in art is the Color Wheel. I find it amazing how 6 shades of pigment can create an array of colors that stretch from here to eternity. If you have read about, were forced, or voluntarily studied the color wheel then you understand how it works. Primary Colors make Secondary Colors and then Primary and Secondary Colors make Tertiary Colors. Its brilliant and if you have an affinity for mixing paints like I do, then you probably adore this wheel as well. If you've never heard of it, or studied it... refer to the link above before proceeding... or don't as its not 100% necessary... or required.

NOW, I'm going to explain why I think one basic color above all is others is the best:

GREEN.

In art you have a variety of things to consider whilst trying to balance a work of art. One major thing I believe is neglected most often is color balance. Aside from the fact that I just think the color green is gorgeous, I think it is the major contender when it comes to balance and harmony within a painting. I divide the way I look at color in  two ways: warms and cools... I think most people divide color that way. Reds, oranges and yellows cover the warm spectrum while blues, greens and purples typically cover the cool spectrum. Now most people automatically throw green into the cool color category, but I partially disagree with this categorization. I believe it belongs in both categories. It is a color chameleon, it adapts to its surroundings to fit in. Hence its undeniable awesomeness and my favoritism.

Take for instance these two insanely awesome paint paintings of a dinner plate I manipulated... roll with it, I didn't have time to get uber creative... and this covers a whole array of points to be made. Both by me and the food pyramid.

I've left out the color green on the left dinner plate to show you just how unbalanced and color ugly it is without the use of green and/or a healthy leafy green vegetable. It seems unfinished, no? And most definitely not as nutritious. The "right" (he he!) dinner plate has just a tiny bit of green and it looks finished and like the most balanced work of art and/or meal you've ever seen! AWESOME! Well as awesome as a paint program painting can get... Paint, seriously sucks.
