Doodle Friday: In A Galaxy...

I had really planned on doing a couple Christmas related doodles and what not, but remember that creative A.D.D. I described a little ways back? Yea. It struck again. This time in the most random way possible... at least for me.

Now, my close friends and family know that I'm already kind of a dweeb when it comes to some things, but declaring my nerdiness in a bold type font that's screen printed on a poly/cotton tee is just something I'm not going to do. "I <3 Nerds" will never be a part of MY wardrobe.

With that said, this particular doodle was a happy accident and I think its tres adorable!

HELLO STAR WARS!
(you might want to click on it to see it BIGGER!)

I actually really like Star Wars. Always have. Well, the OLD ones at least. The new ones are kiiiind of annoying... Jar Jar Binks? Seriously, WTF? Anyway, this whole doodle started with my new phone... and browsing for new wallpapers for said phone... and coming across a really simple almost stick like drawing wallpaper... and then thieving said drawing and changing it...AND then finding another similar drawing... and then changing THAT and then adding another figure and then... BOOM! Accidental Princess Leia. It was the hair... I was trying to draw a simplified piggy tail braid and what did I get? Buns. And then I drew CHEWBACCA! Aside from the Ewoks, Chewy is my favorite, mostly because of the way he "talks". It's probably my favorite sound in the world. It just gives me the warm and fuzzies. The rest was downhill from there. I always thought Luke Skywalker had terrible hair, hence his mullet like frock. Yoda's cane makes me giggle, and Vader has a CAPE! Booyah! And they ALL remind me of Lego men... how lovely!

No? Just me? Huh... oh well! I do love me some legos...

Cheerio!

OH! P.S. I hand drew these cuties first, and THEN I painstakingly spent way too many hours re-drawing them on my computer :-) tada! These are much cleaner than my pencil drawings... much, MUCH cleaner!

Doodle Friday: Mrow? Mrow!

Have you ever had a moment, a special moment where your eyes make contact with something and you just know that it was meant to be? Yeeeaaa... I do. All. The. TIME. I literally see something so unbelievably stupid and I just know that I'm going to obsess over it until I get one. I collect the most ridiculous crap. My latest obsession:

Maneki Neko!
(Mrow?)

You may have seen these in restaurants, flee markets, or in cartoons... they literally show up in the most random places (in Western culture that is). I did a little research about this totes adorbs little kitty and schooled myself in Eastern vs. Western culture hand gestures... to the Westerner, he looks like he's waving *awe* but really, this little putty tat is beckoning you. That's right, he's calling yo' ass over to give you good luck and unimaginable wealth... uh, eventually.

Buddha Baby!

If I'm one thing, it's punctual. I always try to show up at  least 10 minutes early... for anything. However, when it comes to anything art related... I tend to drag my heels, but not for the reasons you think.

For instance, this cheery little piece above was commissioned by a friend of mine. She thought she'd do a little unique gifting for her boyfriend's birthday and I was honored when she asked me for help. Unfortunately the timing was a little off... I was due to leave for a Florida-ish vacation in less than a week, which just happened to be the same day as his birthday... BUT being the over achiever that I strive to be (yet don't always accomplish) - I replied with a hearty "I can probably get it done before I leave!" YEEEEAAAA.... that totally didn't happen, but not for a lack of trying mind you. I had the concept, layout, and the canvas completely prepped for finishing touches... but twenty loads of laundry, packing, and then trying to find a babysitter for my cat took precedence in the ninth hour. So I apologized, explained the sitch, and said I would finish it when I got back, which I did... two months later... bad dog! This particular form of procrastination was due in large part by being unbelievably busy when I got home coupled by a TON of house projects that needed to get finished before the inevitable impending DOOM of seasons... aka "Winter."

I always get this overwhelming sense of "possible failure" before diving into a project I promised I'd do for someone else. I always ask myself, "what if falls short of their expectations?" or "what if they hate it?" OR "what if they round house kick the canvas back in my face and then throw a hot dog at me?" There is nothing more shameful than getting beamed by a tube steak made of mystery meat... nothing. This type of procrastination played a very small part in the delay of this particular painting, which I still feel guilty aboot. Fortunately [for me] they loved it when I did finish it. PLUS I managed to do it in a weekend! Oodalolly! Oodalolly! Golly what a day!

Creative A.D.D. or Doodle Friday!

Hello, my name is Kailee and I have Art-tention Deficit Disorder. [Hello Kailee.] This is the kind of disorder for which there is no cure or medication... except for maybe more cowbell... nyes... definitive tones to soothe the senses.

Anywho. What I'm trying to get across is that I have a serious problem with focus. I'll be working on something and thinking about working on something else, to the point where I feel like that time spent working on one thing is wasting time not working on another. So when I switch to work on another project the same thing happens until I've somehow built up umpteen zillion projects that have yet to be finished. You see, by the time I reach my 20th project I've already lost steam on the first one... so a lot of things never reach completion. You should see the hollow graveyard of ceramic pieces that have yet to see a coat of paint. Aww shucks. [Hello hollow graveyard.]

I should clarify that my attention span doesn't just cover my art projects... it extends way beyond that. I'll get bored fixing my hair sometimes and stop halfway through and leave to go fold laundry or something.

So, in delightful self-mockery, here's half a doodle:

12.5 Cents!

What's funny, is by the time I got to the lettering... I was totally bored. Hence the reason why they are not entiiiiirely accurate... you're welcome for proving... my point? Wait. What? Yeeeaaaa...

Cheerio!

P.S. Big thanks to Katie for calling me out on my lacking of a Doodle Friday... I believe to many, November had many names. For instance "No Shave November." However, for me it was a "NO Post November." Seriously, I think my last post was on Halloween...actually, I know it was. So, here's to a new Holiday ya'll! To next year's "NO Post November!"

Doodle Friday...on a Monday!

Many apologies for my lack of Doodle Fridays... there's no excuse, except for an excuse... ? YEA. Besides, I wanted to save this one for MONDAY because its Halloween! So while you're taking the kiddies trick or treating or you just happen to be walking down a dark alley all alone, beware of the...

Hung Liu

I have two very different palettes when it comes to art. While I enjoy very abstract and messy art with no rhyme or reason for its existence except that it just matriculated from someone's subconscious immensely, I absolutely adore very refined works of art whose creator approached the canvas with such meticulous attention to detail and refinement that it literally leaves you awestruck.  Big words aside - I like it neat and I like it sloppy!

Two very conflicting approaches are they not?

So what happens when Sir Sloppy Joe meets Queen of Painstakingly Precise?

You get one of my favorite artists that's what!

Hung Liu:

"Peaches"

I first discovered her work in college while nodding off in one of my many art history courses... give me a break, I worked full time and always carried about 18 credits. I was exhausted 98% of the time. I always sat in the front row too... and I always aced my papers. True credit really must go to my professor, she is a genius. Her lectures always managed to reach the far recesses of my mind, even while I was unconscious. Now, back to Hung Liu...

"Concession" ... maybe, I had a really hard time finding this photo...
Concession may be the title of the show it was in.

I love the duality of her work. Of how it can at once be both chaotic and yet perfectly organized. Liu emigrated from China in  1984 and was one of the first Chinese artists to study in the U.S. Her works represent the ongoing tension between emigration and immigration and often make use of anonymous Chinese historical photographs. Her subject matter focuses primarily of women, children, refugees and soldiers.

"Leaf Picker III"

"The Menders: Mother and Daughter"

"Da Fan Che Lotus State III"

I found another version of the same painting. She always
seems to go back and add or change things... brilliant.

"Baby King"
Liu's works are usually VERY large, drippy (which I LOOOVE), and are washed with layers and layers of linseed oil. Focus on all the details! Fall in love with the messy! Her work is absolutely FAB-U-LOUS!

"Golden Rain"

I couldn't find the title... all my notes said were "Jeanc"

Her works are just mesmerizing and the colors are simply beautiful. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Cobbler Anyone?

I absolutely adore unconventional forms of art. Pushing the boundaries on normal expectations of what art is, should, and could be is just... fabulous!

I obviously have a lot of other interests outside of art. I play the piano, I love to read, I like re-doing furniture, I enjoy sewing, I tolerate gardening... I didn't quite inherit that green thumb. However, one thing that I love above a lot of other things (and I'm sure most women and a hefty handful of men would agree with me on) is...

SHOES!

HOLY CRAP do I love shoes. I have an entire closet dedicated to JUST shoes. It's awesome. So, how does my love of shoes tie into my love of art? Well that's simple:

SHOE ART!

Shart? No, no, no... HA! But seriously, isn't the idea of artistic shoes just the most fantastically fabulous idea ever conceived? I do. A lot. And then I do some more. I've ca-ruised the web to find some amazing shoe ideas... some practical, wearable, and some totally ridiculous...

I'm absolutely BANANAS about these shoes.

THESE shoes, are basically just pure awesomeness.

by Alexander McQueen, I love the color on the middle shoe, and
I just think the armadillo shoes are silly looking! So not practical...

While the style of the shoe is rather ugly, what I enjoy is
the pattern, textures, and the color combinations.

HOLY CRAP. These shoes are HI-LARIOUS! I've seen variations on the
"Hoof" shoe before, but never with a pistol heel! BOOM Shaka laka!

You can actually HEAR the noise gum makes in this
particular kind of situation.

This is brilliant. Coffee anyone? I'll take two. Size 10. Thanks.

HAHAHA...haha!

I seriously want. Please? Ok.

Go Go Grease Lightning!

I'm not a huge fan of spines and stuff, but you have
to admit... these are pretty... interesting.

Crazy creepy.

OLIVE-freakin OYL! WANT.

Serious Ballerinas need apply only.

These are modeled after Madonna... I say Barbie, but whatever.

These take me back to my Scandinavian roots...

GROSS! Bird fan I am not.

I have a secret obsession with wooden shoes from Holland...
which isn't a secret obsession anymore.

Fellas, get yourself a pair of these shoes STAT. So hot.
Here is a link to their website HERE. Go buy...now!
P.S. These are two separate shoes, its not a pair of shoes
in two different colors...

D'aww! I too have a pair of red red rain boots!

I think a wee little piggy in wee little boots is a good place to stop. Good? Great.

Cheerio!

UPDATE: According to a suggestion from a bestie I should have included this photo to make this post even better....

My shoe closet... believe it or not, these aren't ALL of my shoes. I couldn't
fit everything into one photo...and I have shoes scattered through other closets
in my house. Plus, I've added to my collection since this photo was
taken... is that bad?

Crank it Up!

'Ello Darlings!

MAN! Has it been forever and a day since I posted last... my bad ya'll. Things have been a little cray-cray in my neck of the woods, and I have been working on some fantastic things... you'll see the pictures when I'm finished! This will be a quick little post about a few little updates:

NUMERO UNO!

I've added a music playlist to the blog. I've only added a few songs at the moment (mainly because they are all I'm listening to right now) AND I want YOU! to give me music suggestions. My dear sweet friend Kailie - a same named buddy who rocks a different spelling - is my music guru. The girl is an infinite playlist and she always gives fantastic recommendations. Apparently she knows my taste better than I do, or at least she knows where to find great tunes. She's a musical savior. Now I'd like to tap other sources for musical inspirations and feature them on my blog! YAY!

NUMERO DOS!

Most bloggers know how to link their blog things to other webpages and are masterminds of shameless self-promotion... I on the otherhand... well, suck at it to be quite frank. While I'm pretty computer savvy, I'm a little baffled about all of the technical jargon. HENCE why this last little escapade took me forever to even start. I have now linked my blog to a Facebook Page. So now you can "like" me on Facebook, and my posts will automatically generate in their world... well, they are SUPPOSE to populate there... I'm still working out the kinks. They changed EVERYTHING so now its proving to be more difficult. If only I had done that part when I started the blog, then this would be a hella-lot easier to accomplish... but 'ey, I'll get it!

I hope the changing of the seasons transitions well for all of you! Here's to the upcoming holidays, meeting new people and here's to ART!

UPDATE: The Facebook feed is.... ALIVE!!!

19 September 2011

Simply. Favicon.

Salutations my dear sweet Simpletons! Today's post will be short, sweet and world wide web awesome! Blogger recently (or a while ago.. whatev) added a "favicon" feature for their bloggers, which I think is great! I've had the opportunity to design favicons before but never for myself! For those of you that are unaware, a favicon is the teeny tiny little icon/logo up next to your URL...not sure why its not working where that little globe is next to my website name... hmm? Maybe its a Google Chrome thing? Huh, well I shall dig deeper into that issue later... but its on the TAB! Awww yeaa!

Favicons are relatively easy to make, if you have the right software. Luckily for ME, Blogger was kind enough to provide such a program for FREE! (Thanks dudes!)

SEE! AHH!

I have dabbled in a bit of web design before, mostly when I worked for Beartooth-Harley... oh and I'm terrible FYI... my html code reading skills are painfully beginner and highly volatile if left to my own devices... (thanks for never leaving me unchaperoned Robsterdamus!) Sooo, my powers were limited to designing online ADVERTISEMENTS aka "banners." Most websites have banners plastered e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e.... so yes, I'm a former contributor to constant annoyances on your daily web browsing commute. You're welcome :-)

While the favicon may be one small step forward in creating a "name" for myself, its only the beginning. As I've mentioned before, I have big things planned... BIG! For now, I hope this teeny tiny emblem made your day as happy as it made mine!

Herakut!

I have just made a new discovery that I MUST share! Now, through the years of my art education I've been made aware of the rise in graffiti art popularity, but up until a few months ago never paid it much attention... I don't get overly ecstatic for bubble letters written on a wall. I came across Herakut while cruising for art ideas... or shopping... I can never keep track of my constant mouse clicking. They are a stellar man (Akut) and  woman (Hera) duo of creative ingenuity.

As many of you have figured out by now, my art tends to lean towards the abstract portraiture category with a bit of spicy randomness thrown in. While my images remain unique in their own right, I am constantly comparing what I do with my art to what other are doing and secretly wishing I had their style. Alas, that will never be, almost like my desire to wear crayon colored skinny jeans with ballet flats - that trend ain't never happenin' with THIS booty yo. Oddly enough though, there are similarities in figure interpretation between their stuff and mine... but then again, I could just be drawing strings where there are none... :-)

ANYWAY... the thing I like about these Herakut cats is their figure interpretation and their... straaaaange imagination. The way they attack a gallery space is phenom and not only that, a lot of their work is on buildings. Sometimes HUUUGE BUILDINGS! To have that kind of transition in an art setting is wonderful. It's.... Simply. Fabulous! I mean, check these images out!

This is on a building in Berlin! I love the fish "helmet" ! They do this with
various other animals as well... Be-RILLIANT.

This piece is a mural in NYC... I think its titled "Chickens" ?
SWEET SOCKS! <3

I love the colors used on her face! I also love the line quality and mix
of grunge with refined detail. Superb! Mural in Culver City, Los Angeles

Hera at work. I love images of the artistic process... to see something
at its earliest stages is a sight to behold.
I cannot get over these socks!

Mural in Tel Aviv, Israel

Akut and Hera
Hope you enjoyed this little snippet into the world of a seemingly endless amount of artistic awesomeness produced by the ^above^ duo!
